SYMPTOM

I would like to file for an extension on my W-2, 1099, or 1095 forms with the federal government.  How do I do that?

SOLUTION

The Yearli Desktop software does not offer the ability to submit requests for filing extensions to the federal government.  Please use the information below to find the best process to request a filing extension from the federal government.

W-2 Extension

Effective with Tax Year 2016 there is no automatic filing extension given to employers.  To request a W-2 filing extension:

  • Complete Form 8809.
  • Include a detailed written explanation of why an extension is needed.
  • The request must be signed by the filer or person who is authorized to sign for that company.
  • File the 8809 and extension request as soon as it is known an extension is needed.  The 8809 must be filed by the due date of the return (January 31).
  • The 30 day extension will only be granted in extraordinary circumstances or catastrophe.

1099 Extension

  • Complete Form 8809.
  • File the 8809 as soon as it is known an extension is needed.  The 8809 must be filed by the due date of the return (for 1099-MISC forms with box 7 it is January 31).
  • If approved, the extension will be for 30 days from the original due date of the return.
  • A second extension may be requested for an additional 30 days.  If this is needed, complete form 8809 and check the box on line 5.

1095 Extension

  • Complete Form 8809.
  • File the 8809 as soon as it is known an extension is needed.  The 8809 must be filed by the due date of the return (February 28 for paper filed 1095 forms or March 31 for e-filed 1095 forms).
  • If approved, the extension will be for 30 days from the original due date of the return.
  • A second extension may be requested for an additional 30 days.  If this is needed, complete form 8809 and check the box on line 5.
