"The Payers selected do not have any state information. Please enter state data in 'Payer State Info' on the Manage Payer screen and on your return"

SYMPTOM

The following error message displays when attempting to e-file to the state:

"The Payers selected do not have any state information.  Please enter state data in 'Payer State Info' on the Manage Payer screen and on your returns."

CAUSE

The error message displays when attempting to e-file to the state without any state information entered on the form:

RESOLUTION

Procedure 1 (Entering state information on a W-2 form)

  1. Click on the Payer List button.
  2. Double click on the payer name.
  3. Choose the recipient to add state information to.
  4. Double click on the W-2 in the Form List.
  5. Navigate to the Return Information tab in the W-2 data entry screen.
  6. Choose the applicable state(s) from the State drop down menu(s). Make note of which state is entered first and which state is entered second.  Enter the correct state ID if applicable.  
  7. If the Data Entry Method is set to Year-End:
    1. Click on the Dollar Amounts tab and enter the applicable state wage information. State One Wages and State One Withheld will refer to the state listed first in the Return Information tab. State Two Wages and State Two Withheld will refer to the second state.
    2. Click Save.
    3. Click OK.
  8. If the Data Entry Method is set to Quarterly:
    1. Click Save on the W-2 data entry screen.
    2. Click OK.
    3. Open a transaction by double clicking on the word Transaction.
    4. Enter the applicable state information. State One Wages and State One Withheld will refer to the state listed first in the Return Information tab on the W-2. State Two Wages and State Two Withheld will refer to the second state.
    5. Click Save.
    6. Click OK.

Procedure 2 (Entering state information on a 1099 form)

  1. Click on the Payer List button.
  2. Double click on the payer name.
  3. Choose the recipient to add state information to.
  4. Double click on the 1099 in the Form List.
  5. Navigate to the Return Information tab in the 1099 data entry screen.
  6. Enter the applicable state information. State Income(1) and State tax withheld (1) will refer to the state listed first in the Return Information tab on the 1099. State Income(2) and State tax withheld (2) will refer to the second state.
  7. Click Save.
  8. Click OK.
