SYMPTOM

The 941, 944, or 940 form was rejected for an invalid PIN.

CAUSE

To file a 941, 944, or 940 form electronically require an IRS issued PIN.  The form could have been rejected for one of two reasons:

  • The PIN entered on the form does not match what the IRS has on record for the EIN.
  • There is no PIN assigned to the EIN entered on the form.

SOLUTION

Procedure 1: Verify the PIN entered

If you are certain that a PIN was applied for and assigned to the EIN, please contact the IRS at 1-866-255-0654 to verify the validity of the PIN entered.

Procedure 2: Apply for a PIN

If a PIN was not applied for and assigned to the EIN, please submit a PIN application to the IRS.  This can be completed, free of charge, on Yearli.

Procedure 3:  Enter a new PIN and re-submit

  1. Click on the Payer List button.
  2. Choose the Payer.
  3. Open the form by double clicking on it within the Form List.
  4. Change the PIN.
  5. Save the form.
  6. Re-submit the form with the updated PIN.
